Cal Rowers Off To Strong Start In Tokyo

A trio of Cal rowers made a strong first impression on the first day of competition of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on the Sea Forest Waterway.

Former Golden Bear Kara Kohler, who won the bronze medal in the women’s four at the 2012 Olympics in London, won her heat in the single sculls with a time of 7:49.71 to advance to the quarterfinals for Team USA on Sunday. Kohler was a four-time All-American at Cal who won the bronze medal in the single scull at the 2019 World Championships.

Jack Cleary, a 2018 Cal graduate, earned a trip directly to Monday’s A-final of the men’s quadruple sculls with his Australian teammates with a second-place finish in their heat on Friday morning with a time of 5:41.54.

Incoming freshman Gennaro di Mauro also took second place in his heat in the single scull, finishing in a time of 7:06.87. He advanced to Sunday’s quarterfinals.

Saturday in Tokyo will be the busiest day yet for the Golden Bears, with plenty of more rowing on both the men’s and women’s side. Valerie Arioto and Team USA’s softball team returns to the field against Mexico while former Cal tennis player Ben McLachlan opens up the doubles competition with Japanese teammate Kei Nishikori against Portugal.

The first water polo action featuring Golden Bears takes place on the women’s side, as rising senior Emma Wright and alums Kindred Paul and Kelly McKee open up pool play for Team Canada against Australia.

Alums Kendall Chase (USA), Rosemary Popa (Australia) and Rowan McKellar (Great Britain) each row in the women’s four, with Chase and Popa going head to head in the same heat. Sydney Payne (Canada) also makes her debut in the women’s eight. On the men’s side, Martin Mackovic (Serbia) and Niki van Sprang (The Netherlands) go head to head in the men’s pair heats with Joachim Sutton (Denmark) also competing. Julian Venonsky (USA) and Angus Dawson (Australia) row in the men’s eight heats.
