Being one of the best names in the draft, Michael Mastrodomenico has certain ice qualities that could one day make him an effective supporter in the American Hockey League (AHL) or the highest level in the NHL. Playing for the Lincoln Stars in the United States Hockey League (USHL), he finished with four goals and 18 points in 53 games, and played for Team Canada in the IIHF U18  World Championship, where he played four games, taking the tournament to four. ended with. Penalty Minutes and Plus-1 in the plus/minus column.

Crime is the name of the game when it comes to MastroDomenico because he has never seen a crowd he doesn’t want to be a part of. As Elite Prospects’ Scouting Report indicates, “Chaos defines his game. Every time he steps on the ice, stuff happens. Good things don’t always happen, but good things are especially exciting.” ” (From ‘Elite Prospects 2022 Draft Guide – Michael Mastrodomenico’, Elite Prospects, June 2022). Basically, while that chaos doesn’t always lead to positive results, it’s exciting to watch.

Unfortunately, MastroDomenico struggles with his skating mechanics and overall speed, despite his desire to jump into the play. As a defender in the modern NHL, this would be a problem. Although he would like to be active from his defensive position, he may not make much of a difference at the NHL level. In fact, he could hurt his team in the process, given that he probably won’t be able to get back on the defensive as quickly. Having said that, scouts have taken note of his ability to block shots and break up simple plays that are out of his area, so the hope is that he can still be a useful defender in the big leagues. Committed to the University of Notre Dame in the fall, it will be interesting to see how he adjusts his game to the bigger and faster competition in the NCAA.

Michael Mastrodomenico – NHL Draft Projection
With draft prospects estimated to go as high as the third round by Hockey and as late as the fourth round/early fifth round by other outlets, MastroDomenico certainly guarantees a flier as the 8th of July progresses. Her skating would keep her from having high drafts, but her willingness to jump and cleverness and her size 6-foot-2 — not to mention the fact that she’s a right-handed shot — should at least make a scout stand. Recommend him/her to your General Manager for up-and-coming rounds.

Citation
“Mastrodomenico activates with every possible opportunity. He lifts up the ice to join the crowd, uses every inch of space before shooting, and poses a shooting threat by slamming down the vulnerable side.” – Elite Prospects 2022 NHL Draft Guide

“Mastrodomenico is a big-bodied, two-pronged defender who can make simple plays to be an effective player. In the offensive and neutral areas, I thought he had good eyesight. He could hit open teammates and play with his club. Could set up the offense for him. I love his shot selection too. He is adept at finding the shooting lane and always keeping his shots short, opening up opportunities for rebounds for his teammates.” – Josh Frojelin, FC Hockey

“With non-stop activation and pinch well, he is always a passing option and extends offensive zone time. Those skills also limit his time spent defending, as he may even before he starts. He’s patient and creative with the puck on his stick, turning low-percentage shots into nearby slots or dump-outs into a clean breakout in the middle. Skating remains the most pressing object in his game .

NHL potential
Mastrodomenico’s skating would prevent him from becoming a regular top four defenseman in the NHL. From the videos I saw on him, he seems to have a good first pass and enough shots, so if he can develop his skating, he could turn into a good option as a callup or bottom-pair defenseman . At the very least, he has enough skills to become a travelsman defenseman in the AHL.

Risk-reward analysis
Risk – 3/5, Reward – 4/5

Offense – 7/10, Defense – 6/10

Awards/Achievements
Mastrodomenico was named in Team Canada at the 2022 U18 World Championship where he played four games.
