SC government officials urge residents to listen to hurricane warnings!– OnMyWay Mobile App User News

On Thursday, Gov. Henry McMaster shared the latest updates on Hurricane Ian.

He highlighted all the impacts that Ian will have on the Palmetto State, but his biggest concern was human error.

People know what they should and shouldn’t do, but not listening.

McMaster said it doesn’t matter if Ian is a hurricane or a tropical storm. What’s important is that people listen to weather and government officials to avoid preventable situations.

“The biggest variable is human reaction, is people failing to take the necessary precaution. That’s the real danger,” Gov. McMaster said.

Some of that necessary precaution includes moving to higher ground before a flash flood warning and preparing your home for strong wind gusts.

“Run from the water and hide from the wind,” Gov. McMaster said.

However, some people may find themselves in rising water if they’re out on the roads, and while it may seem quicker to go around a barricade or push through that water, John Quagliariello with the National Weather Service said it’s best to “turn around, don’t drown.”

Ken Stenson with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division added that getting caught in moving water could be deadly.

“You and your vehicle could be easily swept away,” Stenson said.

The governor said that the state is prepared for whatever Ian brings like broken powerlines, knocked down trees and damaged houses, but wants residents to be prepared as well.

“We’re prepared, but people be careful. Be careful, be smart, don’t be a statistic,” Gov. McMaster said.

The governor also emphasized the importance of getting information from reliable sources like government and weather organization pages.

If you do have to be out on the roads tomorrow

The South Carolina Dept. of Transportation has sent an additional 100 employees to help impacted areas and respond to any situations, but it’s best to avoid the roads entirely.
