The University of Wisconsin athletic department says it has contacted UW-Madison police to investigate who may have leaked private photos and video of members of the women’s volleyball team without their consent.
The athletic department released a statement on the matter Wednesday after the images were being shared online.
The materials originated on the phone of a member of the team. It’s unclear how they were distributed.
An announcement launched by the athletic division didn’t supply particulars concerning the images and video, however the Journal Sentinel obtained a photograph from a supply who mentioned it was one of many pictures in query. It seems to have been taken after the group clinched the Huge Ten title final November. Within the photograph, some group members may be seen posing with their sports activities bras lifted.
According to UW, the pictures and video were not intended to be made public.
“We are aware that private photos and video of UW volleyball student-athletes that were never intended to be shared publicly are being circulated digitally,” UW’s statement read.
According to UW, team members contacted university police after learning that the photos were circulating. Police are investigating a number of crimes, including sharing sensitive photos without consent, the athletic department statement said.
“Unauthorized sharing is a significant and false invasion of student-athletes’ privacy, including potential violations of university policies and criminal statutes,” the statement read.
Most of the content has been removed from the websites where it was posted without the consent of the players.
Led by coach Kelly Sheffield, the Wisconsin volleyball team made headlines for its game. A national powerhouse and arguably the athletic department’s most successful event, UW has played in the last three finals and reached the final three times in the past decade.
The team is 13-3 in the Big Ten with a 7-1 record and is ranked No. 5 in the country. UW’s next match against Michigan State is Friday at 7 p.m. at UW Field House.
