Early Monday morning, Duke Energy reported thousands of residents in western North Carolina were dealing with power outages after a night of heavy wind, rain and snow.

As of 8 p.m., Buncombe County has over 1,700 outages and Henderson County has more than 1,200 customers without power.

WINTER STORM WARNING THROUGH 12 PM MONDAY for Buncombe, Avery, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Haywood Counties and above 3,500′ across Swain, Graham, and northern Jackson Counties.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY THROUGH 12 PM MONDAY for Cherokee, Clay, Macon, Transylvania, Henderson, the mountains of Polk, Rutherford and McDowell Counties, and for elevations below 3,500′ across Swain, Graham, southern Jackson Counties.

Heavy snow is expected for some. Total snow accumulations ranging from 1 to 2 inches in southeast parts of the county to 3 to 6 inches along with the northern parts and higher terrain. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph at times.

Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute. The winds may blow down tree limbs and produce scattered power outages.

Although the ground is relatively warm because of the recent warm temperatures, the snow is expected to fall at high rates and accumulate even on many roadways. The snow should taper off from the west Monday morning. Slippery roads and black ice conditions could persist or redevelop well into Tuesday morning.
