A tornado was confirmed late Monday near Alvarado as severe thunderstorms continued to sweep across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, according to the National Weather Service.

At 10:55 p.m., the tornado was moving east at 45 mph. The tornado warning for Johnson County expired at 11:15 p.m. but it remains in effect for Ellis County until 11:45 p.m.

At 11:15 p.m., Midlothian was in the path of the thunderstorm that produced the tornado, according to the weather service.

The tornado watch that was in effect until 2 a.m. Tuesday for Tarrant County and other surrounding counties was canceled, according to the weather service.

Large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes are possible across the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, according to the weather service. Locally heavy rainfall between 1 to 2 inches, with isolated heavier amounts, are also possible across eastern parts of North Texas.

The weather service also issued a flash flood warning for Collin County and southeastern Denton County until 2 a.m. Radar indicated about thunderstorms producing heavy rain across that area.

Between 1 and 3 inches of rain fell in the flash flood warning area. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible especially across southern Collin County, the weather service said.

The main threats with the storms are potential large hail, strong winds and isolated tornadoes, said meteorologist Steve Fano with the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth.

The severe weather should continue until about midnight on Monday. The greatest threat for severe weather will be roughly along and north of Interstate 20.
