Severe thunderstorm watch for Calgary lifted!– OnMyWay Mobile App User News

Environment Canada Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins said it’s unlikely Calgary and its surrounding areas will see as much precipitation as they did last week

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued another severe thunderstorm watch for Calgary on Sunday.

The watch, released just before noon, cautioned that thunderstorms would develop in the afternoon and evening but then dissipate overnight.

“Some of these thunderstorms may be capable of producing heavy rain, strong winds and large hail,” said the national weather agency.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.

Severe thunderstorm watches were also issued for areas surrounding Calgary including Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds, Sundre, Okotoks, High River and Claresholm.

By 7 p.m. all watches had been dropped.

Surrounding areas were slammed by showers though, with the foothills seeing up to an estimated 150 mm in some areas and the Kananaskis region getting the biggest dump at 218 mm.

“Of course, you can get heavy downpours with the thunderstorms, but it won’t be as widespread and localized amounts are not expected to be that great,” said Desjardins.

As far as flood risk goes, City of Calgary officials lifted a state of local emergency on Friday enacted in response to the deluge last week, stating they believed a concerning weather system they were monitoring will head south of the city. The significant rainfall prompted the city to construct a clay berm on Memorial Drive to protect residents and infrastructure from rising Bow River levels. The berm was taken down over the weekend.
