Crews Hustle to Stop Flooding Around Salt Lake County! – OnMyWay Mobile App User News

Heavy rains sent public works crews, firefighters, and police scrambling all over Salt Lake County Wednesday afternoon.

A strong storm cell hit the county just after noon, causing creeks to over run their banks in several areas places.

Mill Creek on the east side of the valley overflowed for a few hours and caused some street flooding. Standing water on I-215 east belt forced the Utah Highway Patrol to shut down the freeway for a brief time. Two lanes of northbound I-215 are expected to remain closed for 18 hours, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

In Herriman, a surge of water ran into the basements of 2 homes on Silver Bowl Drive.

“It’s just like a river, you got the river coming down, it was a nightmare,” a resident named Sarah told 2News. “It was in probably an hour of that major downpour that neighbors were calling … their basement is toast.”

Herriman City sent public works crews to clear storm drains and help pump water out of homes. The crews and volunteers placed sandbags around the affected homes to prevent any additional water from pouring in.

Riverton City officials said there were a few reports of street flooding around 2:00 p.m., but the water had receded within a few hours.

In addition to the flooding, thick smoke from wildfires in California moved into the Salt Lake Valley. Herriman City officials said they received several calls from residents concerned that there was a fire in the area.

“It does appear this smoke is just lingering from the fires that are happening in the west,” Herriman City spokesperson Tami Moody told 2News.

Other parts of Utah are also dealing with the aftermath of flooding from the heavy rains. School was cancelled in Delta after much of the city flooded.
