South Africa’s favourite mayonnaise discontinued

South African mayonnaise lovers would’ve been saddened to hear that a favourite brand of many will no longer be available on local supermarket shelves.

Unilever has reportedly confirmed that it’s discontinuing Hellmann’s Mayonnaise in South Africa due to “high inflationary import costs” in 2023.

The fact that the product will not be available until further notice has left mayo lovers extremely disappointed and most of them have assumed it won’t be available in other regions as well, which, at the time of writing, is not true.

Hellmann’s Mayonnaise is the latest condiment to be added to the list of products discontinued in South Africa in 2023 along with Redro Fish Spread, Cadbury’s Tempo, and Simba’s All-Gold Tomato Sauce Chips.

The Unilever-owned American Mayo brand, Hellmann’s, is pulling back from the South African market due to low demand on top of “highly inflationary import costs”. Starting today, the creamy mayo is being discontinued in South African markets and will no longer be seen on store shelves or online. However, it’ll still be available in the United States.

Inflation has resulted in a hike in import and export costs across the world. From food brands to cosmetics, almost every industry has been facing similar difficulties. Considering the low demand of the product in the South African market, the company had to make the tough decision in order to save itself from the “highly inflationary import costs”.
