‘Yellowstone’ To End, Sequel Greenlit At Paramount With Matthew McConaughey Still In Talks To Star

Kevin Costner and the rest of the “Yellowstone” cast are officially hanging up their cowboy hats.

On May 5, Paramount Network announced that the hit TV show will end after the second half of Season Five premieres in November.

While our time on Dutton Ranch is coming to an end, Paramount Network confirmed that the Dutton story isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, a new untitled “Yellowstone” sequel is currently in the works and will premiere on the network in December.

“The Dutton story continues, picking up where ‘Yellowstone’ leaves off in another epic tale,” David Glasser, CEO, 101 Studios, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to bring this new journey to audiences around the world.”

While details are slim, “Yellowstone” fans can rest easy knowing the new series is in good hands. It will be led by “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan, and produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, the same companies that brought the western drama to life.

“’Yellowstone’ has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits — from ‘1883’ to ‘Tulsa King’, and I am confident our ‘Yellowstone’ sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life,” Chris McCarthy, President & CEO Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, added.

“Yellowstone,” which follows the Dutton family and their sprawling cattle ranch in Montana, has proven to be one of the most popular shows on television. The premiere of the first half of Season 5, which aired in November 2022, pulled in a staggering 17 million viewers.

The sequel series not only allows Paramount and Sheridan to bypass any potential issues with Costner, but it also allows them to stream a new series featuring most of the original “Yellowstone” cast, as “Yellowstone” itself currently streams on Peacock.

Sheridan currently has a massive overall deal with Paramount, under which he has launch the “Yellowstone” prequels “1883” and “1923,” as well as the shows “Mayor of Kingstown” and “Tulsa King.” He also has the upcoming shows “Lioness,” “Land Man” and “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” with several more in development.

Alongside Costner, who plays John Dutton, Yellowstone stars the likes of Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille and Gil Birmingham

Costner’s John Dutton character has weathered hitmen, as seen at the end of season three when the whole family was attacked, and unscrupulous real estate developers attempting to wrest control of the sprawling Montana-based Dutton Ranch away from him. At the end of the first part of Season 5, he’s now dealing with his children trying to kill each other.

“Yellowstone has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits – from 1883 to Tulsa King, and I am confident our Yellowstone sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life,” said Chris McCarthy, President & CEO Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios.

The original series, which was co-created by Sheridan and John Linson, is produced by 101 Studios and MTV Entertainment Studios and is exec produced by Sheridan, Linson, Costner, Art Linson, David C. Glasser, Bob Yari, Christina Voros and Stephen Kay.
