The Geminids, an annual meteor shower, is set to peak tonight and into tomorrow morning for observers in the Northern Hemisphere.

This year, most people can — weather-permitting. NASA announced it will broadcast a livestream via a meteor camera at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., on its Facebook page starting at 9 p.m. EST tonight.

Various outdoor watch parties are also taking place across Virginia this evening.

The Bay Back Amateur Astronomers Club, based in Hampton Roads, is not holding their own event tonight.

“I’m sure some of our members will venture out tonight like I’m planning to do though,” wrote Shawn Loescher, the club’s president, in a message to The Pilot Monday evening.

Loescher joined NASA in urging interested viewers to get as far away from city lights as possible if they want to see the celestial show for themselves.

The light of the moon can also wash out the light of the meteors, so ideal viewing will take place after the moon sets around 2 a.m. wherever viewers are located.

NASA predicts that views will see as many as 30-40 meteors per hour.

The Geminids take their name from the constellation Gemini, which is the point in the sky from which they appear to radiate.

They’re unique in that they can get as low as 29 miles above Earth’s surface before burning up — which is much lower than meteors belonging to other showers, like the Perseids, tend to burn up.

“Rich in green-colored fireballs, the Geminids are the only shower I will brave cold December nights to see,” said Bill Cooke, lead for NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office, in the announcement.
