The trailer for Ahsoka, coming August 2023 to Disney+, was revealed today during Lucasfilm’s Studio Showcase at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023 — a major moment for the title character and her longtime fans. The trailer features Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano, in addition to Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and our favorite grumpy droid, Chopper, among others, clearly incorporating elements from the beloved Star Wars Rebels animated series and The Mandalorian.
“Something’s coming. Something dark,” Ahsoka says as the trailer opens. “I sense it.” The preview is filled with interesting glimpses of action and story, including Ahsoka in battle against droids, characters wielding red-bladed lightsabers, Mon Mothma, a rear-shot of Grand Admiral Thrawn, and the ancient droid Huyang.
Dawson first portrayed Ahsoka Tano in Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian, “The Jedi.” In the episode, the Mandalorian had sought her out in the hopes that she would train his ward, Grogu, in the ways of the Force. She declined but became an ally, and continued her own mission in locating Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Prior to Tano’s live-action debut, the character originated in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. Voiced by Ashley Eckstein, Ahsoka — nicknamed “Snips” by her master, Anakin Skywalker — evolved from a headstrong student to formidable warrior and leader, before leaving the Jedi Order. Ahsoka would return in the Star Wars Rebels animated series, where should joined forces with the Ghost crew of rebels (including Sabine and Hera) and dueled her fallen master.
Getting to this point has been bumpier than successfully navigating an asteroid field for Lucasfilm. Knight stepped in to write the film after the original screenwriters, Damon Lindelof (HBO’s “Watchmen”) and Justin Britt-Gibson (“Counterpart”), left the project in February — the latest example of high profile creatives departing a “Star Wars” feature project months (or even years) after their involvement was first reported.
In December 2020, Kennedy announced that “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins would helm the first post-“Rise of Skywalker” feature, titled “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.” It was scheduled to open in December 2023, but after years of zero progress on the project, Disney pulled the film from its schedule in September. In March, Variety reported that it was no longer in active development at Lucasfilm.
A similar fate befell an untitled “Star Wars” movie to be produced by Kevin Feige, chief of Lucasfilm’s corporate sibling Marvel Studios. News broke of Feige’s involvement in September 2019, and the project appeared to be active as recently as May 2022. But sources told Variety that Lucasfilm has since shelved the project and it was no longer in active development.
Along with Obaid-Chinoy’s film, Kennedy also announced that James Mangold (who just directed Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”) and Dave Filoni (executive producer of the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka”) will direct upcoming “Star Wars” movies.
Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”) is also developing a “Star Wars” feature in which he would direct and star, and Shawn Levy is still attached to direct a “Star Wars” movie following his work on Marvel’s “Deadpool 3” and the Netflix limited series “All the Light We Cannot See.”
Finally, the stars and filmmakers of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny dazzled the crowd with a never-before-seen trailer, an extensive look at the film, and a brand new poster. Appearing in person were cast members Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen, along with director and co-writer James Mangold and producer Kennedy. Dr. Jones himself, the inimitable Harrison Ford, appeared in a video greeting. The film, which will be Ford’s final Indiana Jones adventure, premieres at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, May 18, and opens in theaters on Friday, June 30.
