John Stamos Reveals the Reason He Asked His Agent to Get Him Off ‘Full House’ After the Table Read

John Stamos has been pretty candid about his earlier years in the industry, and even the times his ego almost got in the way. He recently shared how jealousy of a five-year-old led to him trying to quit “Full House.”

The actor shared the story during his appearance on “Hot Ones,” revealing that he was expecting a show more along the line of “Bosom Buddies,” the subversive sitcom starring Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari as two bachelors who dress as women in order to live in an all-women’s apartment building. The shows shared some creators, but not much else.

“It was pitched to me as a ‘Bosom Buddies’. with, you know, a couple of kids in the background,” he told Sean Evans between rounds of hot wings. “We did a table read of it, and I was the star.”

The YouTube series features celebrities’ answering questions about themselves or other things. They eat wings – where the sauce gets hotter and hotter – during the segment.

John talked about his time on ER, General Hospital, Full House, and more.

About four minutes into the interview, host Sean Evans asked him about how much he learned from his co-stars, Bob Saget and Dave Coulier.

Franklin convinced John Stamos to stay on the show
According to Entertainment Weekly, Full House creator Jeff Franklin spoke on cast member Dave Coulier’s podcast about the show’s very first table read. Stamos was the biggest celebrity there, having received a Daytime Emmy nomination for General Hospital and starring in the spy thriller Never Too Young to Die alongside Robert Englund, George Lazenby, and Gene Simmons.

Franklin went on to say that he found out “much later” that Stamos was “so upset about having to play second fiddle to these really funny kids, that he went out and called his agent and said, ‘This is a mistake. Please remove me from this show.'”

Later in the podcast session, Franklin recounted how the fan-favorite trio of Danny, Jesse, and Joey came to be, despite the fact that John Posey was originally cast as Danny Tanner in the pilot episode.

Saget was always at the top of Franklin’s list for the role of the father, but he was unavailable when the program began production.

However, the show’s creator stated that he “made his peace with the fact that he’s working with the kids and animals and being upstairs.” Which worked out in the end since the comedy went on to be a huge success, lasting eight seasons from 1987 to 1995. Fuller House, which Franklin also developed, resurrected the show in 2016.

Ultimately, Stamos explained that with the help of his late co-star Bob Saget, and a nudge from his agent, he decided to give it a try.

“I fought it for a long time and then I finally said, ‘what am I doing?’ It’s a beautiful show built with sweetness and kindness,” he said, adding he came to the realization that “the central character was love,” and that “we were the best representation of a loving family – not a normal family – and it was the new normal.”

“Full House” aired on ABC between 1987 and 1995. The sitcom followed Saget’s character Danny Tanner, a widower who raises his three daughters with the help of Stamos’s “Uncle Jesse” Katsopolis, and his friend Joey Gladstone, played by Dave Coulier.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen – who Stamos hilariously also recently admitted he tried get fired from the show at first – starred alongside Sweetin and Candace Cameron Bure as the three Tanner daughters. Lori Loughlin played Stamos’ on-screen wife, Becky.

Stamos also starred in “Fuller House,” Netflix’s revival of the beloved series, which debuted in 2016 and ran for five seasons.
