Canelo vs. Ryder Results: Live updates of the undercard and main event

Canelo Alvarez is back tonight in Mexico, facing John Ryder in a defense of the Mexican superstar’s undisputed super middleweight championship.

It’s an early start time for the pay-per-view, which will go live at 7 pm ET on DAZN pay-per-view.

We’ll be here for the full main card, with Wil Esco on round-by-round and live round-by-round, results, highlights, updates, and more during the show, all in this stream:

The perfect attendance award isn’t necessarily the most-applauded award in school. That’s probably “valedictorian,” or maybe “best couple”? But things get a little different when you get older. And play professional baseball. For 13.5 years without taking a day off. Like Cal Ripken Jr did. On Sept 6 1995, Cal Ripken Jr played in his 2131st game, thus breaking Lou Gehrig’s previously-believed-unbreakable record for most consecutive games ever. And the fans at Camden Yards gave him a 22-minute standing ovation. Ripken’s record-breaking feat was more than a perfect attendance award. To fully realize why Ripken deserved a 22-minute standing ovation, we have to rewind.

The pay-per-view bout is scheduled to take place at Akron Stadium in Alvarez’s hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico, and will be the boxer’s first match in his hometown in 12 years.

Alvarez is a -1,600 betting favorite (risk $1,600 to win $100), while Ryder returns a price of +900 in the latest Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder odds from Caesars Sportsbook. The over/under for total rounds completed is 8.5. Before locking in any Ryder vs. Canelo picks, make sure you check out the boxing predictions and betting advice from SportsLine analyst Peter Kahn.

Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder preview
The last time Alvarez fought in Mexico was in November 2011. He successfully defended the WBC light middleweight title against veteran contender Kermit Cintron with a fifth-round stoppage. It was his 40th professional fight although he was just 21, and nearly two full years before he would suffer his first professional loss against Floyd Mayweather.

Now 32, Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) has emerged as arguably the best fighter of this generation and remains its biggest draw. Since his last fight in Mexico, the majority of his bouts have been high-profile and big-money main events in Las Vegas, with occasional appearances in Texas, Florida and New York in the mix.

Alvarez is well aware of the sport’s history and has repeatedly stated his desire to set as many milestones as possible before hanging up the gloves. For Saturday’s fight, he told the media this week he plans on putting on a memorable performance for his hometown fans and looks forward to making an overdue return to his roots.

Alvarez has long honored contracted fights against mandatory challengers to avoid putting his belts at risk of being vacated. He’s also known for rarely underestimating an opponent and faces a battle-tested challenger in Ryder.

Ryder (32-5, 18 KOs) is a 13-year pro who has held numerous minor belts. The 35-year-old British fighter lost his one prior shot at a major title, dropping a unanimous decision to Callum Smith for the WBA super middleweight title in November 2019.

It has been 11 years since Alvarez last fought in Mexico, delivering a five-round thrashing to Kermit Cintron to retain his WBC junior middleweight title. In the years since that fight, Alvarez has become one of boxing’s elite pound-for-pound champions and biggest draws. He has won titles at junior middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight while chasing new challenges and compiling a resume that guarantees him a future spot in the Hall of Fame.

Two fights ago, Alvarez lost for just the second time in his career, returning to light heavyweight for the second time to face undefeated WBA champion Dmitry Bivol. Bivol was the better man that May 2022 night, outboxing Alvarez with a combination of technique and size. Alvarez bounced back with a win over his biggest rival, Gennady Golovkin, in their rubber match in September.

Ryder has now rattled off four consecutive wins to earn the biggest fight of his career. He will enter the ring as a massive underdog but boxing is not short on historic upsets and Alvarez has looked vulnerable in his recent fights against Bivol and Golovkin.

The trilogy fight with Golovkin was a clear win for Alvarez, though the judges scored it close, but Alvarez was very much unlike his usual self, cautiously approaching the fight despite many feeling Golovkin badly faded entering the fight.

Between that fight and the loss to Bivol, the past year has shown some indication that Canelo may be past his prime as a fighter. it’s up to Ryder to take advantage of that, should it be the case.

“Age can play a part; hunger can play a part,” said Ade.”He has more money in the bank than you can ever wish for. Are the hunger and desire still there to say that I want to be pound-for-pound #1?” “When you have that type of fighter, hunger doesn’t ever go away,” said Akin. “To your point. He has all the money he can use. He like fancy things. You see the toys that he buys. The Lamborghinis and the houses. “So to go into that ring, he’s already rich at this point. You see what he’s doing to Callum Smith. It’s not about money at this point. It’s about legacy, and he says it all the time. I don’t think anybody in boxing has a resume like he dos with his last six opponents,” said Akin.

“If you look at his resume and it’s incredible. At the start against Callum Smith at 168 pounds. You fast forward to 2021 against Caleb Plant when he was undisputed,” said Ade. “The only blemish is Dmitry Bivol, who I think is the best at 175.” “Do you understand that four of those guys were undefeated, and the other guy that wasn’t undefeated, he beat him. That’s it,” said Barak Bess. “That was Gennadiy Golovkin.” “A guy that is 5’8″. He’s smaller than the other 168-pounders, beating the undefeated champions. He has enough to go into the Hall of Fame two times.” “Let’s talk about the opponents after. We haven’t seen Billy Joe Saunders. We talk about Caleb Plant. He recently lost against David Benavidez,” said Akin. “He Canelo puts damage on fighters, and they’re never the same, in my opinion, after fighting.”
