Andrew Wiggins has missed 21 games this season due to personal reasons since mid-February. There were numerous rumors flying around the internet rampantly, and it turns out all of them were wrong.
According to a report from Shams Charania, the reason for Wiggins’ absence was that his father, Mitchell Wiggins, has been dealing with a serious medical situation. Included in the report is that the Golden State Warriors have given Wiggins total space and freedom to deal with this.
It’s a truly tragic situation for Wiggins, and even worse when people were making up rumors about infidelity in his life. As much as Golden State Warriors fans wanted to see him back on the court while the team was struggling, you only get one father. The amount of regret Wiggins would have for not being with his father during that time of need would be far more overwhelming than anything else. Even if he were to play on the court, Wiggins just wouldn’t be there mentally, because he would be thinking about his father. The best thing possible is what the Golden State Warriors have been doing, give Andrew Wiggins space and support until he’s ready to return.
Wiggins last played Feb. 13 before taking a leave of absence for the personal matter, and his return would be huge for the Warriors as the NBA playoffs approach.
Before Wiggins’ absence, the two-way forward was averaging 17.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
The Warriors have gone 12-10 since then and are holding on to a top-six Western Conference playoff spot by the skin of their teeth. Wiggins’ defensive presence has been missed, and the defending NBA champions certainly will welcome him back with open arms.
Despite the Warriors’ on-court circumstances, they made sure not to rush Wiggins back. Exactly how much Wiggins is able to contribute upon his return remains to be seen, but coach Steve Kerr revealed last week that the 28-year-old has been training on his own as he tends to a family matter.
“Well, we love Wiggs, he’s a huge part of our team,” Kerr said March 22 after Golden State beat the Dallas Mavericks. “He’s a great player, but he’s a great human being. He’s just a great teammate, I love coaching him. So anytime you see one of your guys struggling, dealing with something, all you can do is support that player and give them space and that’s what we’ve tried to do.
“But our players and our coaches, front office, we’re all thinking about Wiggs every day. If he comes back, great. If he doesn’t come back, that’s fine too. We just want to make sure that he’s in a good place, taking care of his family and we’ll see how it plays out.”
Blazers beat Timberwolves in largest NBA upset in 30 years
The Portland Trail Blazers pulled off the largest NBA upset in 30 years on Sunday by knocking off the Minnesota Timberwolves as 19.5-point underdogs.
The Trail Blazers were missing four starters, including star guard Damian Lillard, and had lost 11 of 12 games heading into the game. But Portland still managed to rally back from a 12-point deficit in the second half to edge the playoff-minded Timberwolves 107-105 in Minneapolis.
“Every single person that got out on that floor tonight, they gave it all they had and that’s all I want from our guys,” Portland coach Chauncey Billups said. “To play as hard as you can, play unselfish and be a good teammate and see what happens.”
It’s the largest upset via point spread since the Dallas Mavericks beat the Seattle SuperSonics as 19.5-point underdogs on April 6, 1993, and the second-largest upset in ESPN Stats & Information’s database, which goes back to the 1990-91 season. The Orlando Magic beat the Chicago Bulls as 21-point underdogs in 1992, the largest point-spread upset in that time span.
Shaedon Sharpe scored 27 points and Kevin Knox added 19 points to lead the Blazers. Sharpe put Portland up 106-103 with 24.1 seconds left, and the Blazers got a defensive stop on the Timberwolves’ final possession to end a five-game losing streak. It was only Portland’s second win since March 6.
